I have always loved cooking and baking. It’s been a part of everything I do. Raised by a mother who is a wonderful baker and cooks everything from scratch, I was given the space in the kitchen to learn from a very young age. I have fond memories of making chocolate fudge and the many sweet delights found in the Edmonds cookbook. I went on to have a wonderful career around the world working in different areas of food, including catering, baking, teaching and food consulting which has led me to where I am today, with my husband, Mark, and I owning our own bakery – Rise and Flour.
After living in many different countries, including Germany, Australia, the USA, and Hong Kong, we decided to settle in the lovely, quiet village of Fifield. During lockdown, I began making sourdough breads for people in the village. Shortly after, on a visit to the farm shop at Upton Smokery, I took the opportunity to introduce myself and my bread, and before long, I was selling the products wholesale.
I began thinking beyond my home kitchen. There wasn’t an artisan bakery nearby and we thought it would be great to provide people in the local area with wonderful freshly baked sourdough breads, pastries and treats. In 2021, we were lucky enough to find a wonderful space in the Alfred Groves estate which was to become the Rise and Flour artisan bakery.
Since our opening, we’ve expanded our offerings to include hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, soup and many different types of patisseries and savoury pastries. We have installed a new La Marzocco coffee machine, serving Missing Bean® coffee, teas and hot chocolate made with the award winning KOKOA Collection chocolate.
Over the last year, we have participated in local markets and have extended our wholesale customers to include Burford Garden Company and local pubs and cafes in Shipton, Burford and beyond. In 2022, we will continue to offer baking classes and afternoon teas here at the bakery.
What started as a way to fill time during lockdown, has turned into a wonderful opportunity to share my passion for baking and cooking with my local community. I can’t thank enough all the people in Milton, Shipton and the surrounding area for their warm embrace and support of the bakery.
