Pick of the pubs

I am told that The Hare in Milton and The Plough in Kingham have both been recently taken over by the same person. If that is indeed the case, then they should look to replicate at The Plough what they’ve been able to accomplish at The Hare, where the food is still excellent and the service, after a short blip, is friendly and efficient again.

The Hare is back on form. It has the same chef who continues to cook excellent fish. Actually, my guest had lamb which he really enjoyed. It all came quickly so we had time to indulge ourselves with a blackberry and apple pie for my guest and a plate of cheese for me. The service was friendly and speedy. It is everything that a local pub should be and I look forward to my next visit.

I wish I could say the same about The Plough. I took fourteen year old Grace there recently and was distinctly underwhelmed.  The service was friendly but very slow and the food was, to say the least, disappointing.  Grace’s burger was thin and overcooked while my fish and chips consisted mainly of thick batter and average chips.  Four times I asked for a second glass of wine – that was unsatisfactory. I can only hope that this was an off day for the pub and things will improve like it has at The Hare, as The Plough has a pleasant atmosphere and, as I mentioned, friendly staff.
