Two books for Christmas

Fleet Street Exposures, by Stephen Markeson

Stephen Markeson has retired to live locally after a career as a photojournalist.  His recently published ‘coffee table’ book is a fascinating collection of stories and images from the golden era of Fleet Street, when budgets were limitless, deadlines were tight and getting the film from the camera to the darkroom was often a challenge in itself.

His determination saw him rise from messenger boy at The Times to the top of his profession as senior staff photojournalist for that paper, and his resourcefulness is apparent in many of the notes that accompany his iconic photographs.

His life was far from ordinary, with experiences ranging from being shadowed by the KGB and threatened by the IRA to hoodwinking Maggie Thatcher and dancing with Elton John.

The book will appeal to anyone with an interest in recent history, journalism or photography and particularly in the drama and atmosphere of images shot on black and white film.

Mill Memories – A People’s History – Life & Times of the Witney Blanket Worker. Volume 2.

Writing a book of Mill Memories was a learning curve for me, and when it was finally published, I felt not only pleasure, but also relief that I had managed to finish it.  Then other mill workers got in touch to say they wished they had told their stories; time for a second volume.  Due to Covid restrictions, folk emailed or posted their memories to me.  I am so pleased that volume two is now ready.

Witney Museum, who usually close from October to April, have decided to re-open on Sunday 5 December to launch the book and I will be signing copies there too.  Due to a generous financial contribution from the Bartlett Taylor Charitable Trust, I have been able to keep the price at £10.

If you would like a copy, the Post Office at Shipton under Wychwood will be selling copies again. You also can collect a copy from me, or I can also post copies to you, with postage and packing costing £2.60 1st Class or £2.20 2nd Class.  Contact details: or mobile 07979375888.

All Good Wishes
