Michelle Moody owns and runs Cotswold Beauty Salon (previously known as The Beauty Room, Est. 2006) on Groves Yard in Milton under Wychwood.
Tell us where your passion for beauty therapy began. My passion for beauty was awakened at an early age since I had terrible acne as a teenage girl and started receiving facials at the age of 14. I always wanted to be in a position to be able to help someone else in the same predicament. I have trained with many large, well known product houses – Clarins, Decleor, Thalgo, Babor, Elemis, Dermalogica to name just a few. I specialised in non-surgical facials with CACI and IPL Laser Hair Removal.
What was your first beauty job after leaving school? I had a Saturday job at a hair and beauty salon in Ascot, Berkshire during my 2nd year of studying Beauty Therapy at Guildford College of Technology in 1989.
Have you ever run your own business before? Yes, I bought my first salon at the age of 19. It was above a hairdresser in Weybridge, Surrey. I ran this business successfully for 10 years.
Give us a brief outline of where you lived before coming to the Wychwoods. I was born and raised in Virginia Water, Surrey, leaving in my late 20s to live in Winslow, Buckinghamshire with my now husband. I had one child whilst living there before moving to Northamptonshire where I had my 2nd child. My husband’s job relocated to Norfolk so we had one blissful year living there too. Then, in 2012, his job once again relocated to Leafield, Oxfordshire. And that’s when my wonderful life in The Wychwoods began.
What do you love most about your job? I am a real people person so I absolutely adore the one-to-one contact and enjoy building relationships with my clients. It’s also a very satisfying profession, making someone look and feel much better than they did when they first stepped through the door, boosting people’s self-esteem.
What are the most common treatments that you perform? The most popular treatments at Cotswold Beauty are gel manicures, pedicures and massage – many clients tell me that I have ‘magical hands’.
How do you choose to spend your spare time? I work very long days at the salon so spare time is very limited. But during lockdown I’ve really got into walking with our family dog. Also, if time and quietness allow, I really enjoy getting into a good book on my Kindle.
If you had a whole day free and good weather, where would you go from here and why? Right now, I’d have to say the beach. Just to walk along the sand and dip my toes in the sea would be blissful.
And if you had a week free to go on holiday in Britain, where would you go and why? 100% Cornwall. I’m ashamed to say it’s not somewhere I’m familiar with and I would really love to explore this area.
What two non-food items would you take with you if you were shipwrecked on a desert island? Firstly, it would have to be a strong SPF cream to protect my skin and secondly a bottle opener; you just never know when that ship is going to sink and offload its precious bar cargo!
If you could choose one piece of music to play every time you walked into a room for the rest of your life, what would you choose and why? Dancing in the Moonlight by Toploader. It holds many fond memories for me. Also it’s a song that I cannot sit still to; I have to get up and dance (much to the embarrassment of my daughters!)
