The Fifield Stitchers saw the culmination of some five years of planning and work on Thursday 17th September when the Rt Rev’d Colin Fletcher, Bishop of Dorchester, came to Fifield church to bless and dedicate the needlepoint ‘stained glass window’ which depicts the life of St John the Baptist, the patron saint of our church. The Vicar, Rev’d Geoffrey Clement took the service, and Bishop Colin gave the sermon, about the life of John the Baptist, who was the forerunner of Jesus Christ. The lessons were read by Tina Palmer and Vicky Orr-Ewing, Jennifer Charlton played the organ and Catherine Hitchens gave a brief description of the idea for the work and the work itself. A strong team of stitchers produced the window. Lynne Freeman backed and finished the work and, with Vicky Orr-Ewing, painted the wooden frame, which was cleverly made by Martin Ward, to look like stone. It was a very moving service despite restrictions on numbers attending, and the work is now a feature of the West Wall of the church, where it is hoped it will hang for many years.
