The Wychwood magazine
The Wild Garden is a five hectare (12.6 acre) privately owned woodland and garden close to the centre of Shipton-under-Wychwood in Oxfordshire and has a network of paths through woods and around ponds with wild life and local ducks in residence. The Wild Garden adjoins the public footpath to Milton-under-Wychwood. The Garden dates from the late 1700s and was developed extensively in the mid 1800s

We now have the opportunity to purchase the Wild Garden for the benefit of both the residents of the Wychwoods and visitors to the area.

Shipton-under-Wychwood Wild Garden and Woods, a charitable company limited by guarantee, was set up in September 2009 with the active support of and in close co-operation with the Shipton Parish Council to acquire and manage the Wild Garden on behalf of the residents of the Wychwoods and visitors to the locality.  The key aims of the company are to achieve public access to the Wild Garden, maintain and conserve the environment of the Garden and to provide educational resources.

The plan is to acquire the Wild Garden during 2010, carry out essential work to improve access and then open the Wild Garden to the public. There will be no restrictions on access at any time, we will only be asking the public to respect the peace and tranquillity of the space and to keep children and dogs under supervision and control. A management committee is being established which will be responsible for managing and maintaining the Wild Garden with the active support of the Parish Council and the local Shipton Volunteers.

We need your support to do this!
We need to raise an initial sum of £70,000 to acquire the Wild Garden and carry out essential work to allow for full public access.
This is made up of
£50,000 purchase price and a further £20,000 for essential initial work

We estimate that our annual running costs will be about £5,000 to £7,000, including insurance, routine inspections and general repairs and maintenance.

The only income we will have will be from annual subscriptions from members of the Wild Garden company, grants from the local parish councils and possibly some additional grant income for specific projects.

Latest News!
We now own the Wild Garden! Contracts exchanged and money passed hands on Friday 27 August, so the community had done it in just ten months. But still loads of work to do before we can open to the public, most of this will take place in October. Watch this space for progress!
