High notes, low notes

wychwoodchoirawv05The Wychwood Singers have just completed what can only be described as a traumatic but ultimately successful singing year. As many readers will know our much loved Musical Director Robin Martin-Oliver passed away last August. The choir was devastated that he would no longer be with us but determined to carry on as he would have wished.

We were very lucky to find a new Musical Director in Lizzie Soden. Lizzie had been a pupil of Robin’s whilst at Stagecoach, the theatre and music group in Witney, and indeed that link to him was important both to her and to us.

What a year we have had! A sell-out Christmas concert last December, an increase in choir numbers and then a triumph at the Chippy Music festival in March where we received a Highly Commended certificate for a range of African songs. Not sure whether Lizzie’s smiles or tears are our greatest memory of that day.

Then to cap it all we had another sell-out event in the New Beaconsfield Hall for our summer concert. This time we decided we wanted to celebrate the musical life of Robin and all he had done for us. We were joined by both his family and by another of his choirs from Bampton and we hope that the members of the audience enjoyed the evening as much as the choirs. They certainly told us they did and it was even better to know we have raised £1,000 for the Action Bladder Cancer UK charity. Many thanks to all our supporters and those local organisations who donated to the raffle.

To hear songs like Thank You for The Music, The Music’s Always There With You dedicated to Robin and then a finale from the musical Les Miserables brought a tingle down the spine…..well it did for choir members anyway. Our next concert will be on Thursday 5th December so book the date in your diary as we hope to sell out once again.

We are always keen to have new members so please visit our website www.thewychwoodsingers.org where you can find full details as well as photos and indeed videos from our last concert. Singing with a choir is huge fun and you will be given a very warm welcome.
