News from St Mary’s Church

Structural problems with the nave roof at St. Mary’s mean that the expected peel of our newly refurbished bells had to be delayed. A scaffolding platform was erected to enable a full investigation of the roof issues and braces were put in place to support the known weak point of the roof structure; permission was given for the bells to be rung in early May.

On the evening of Sunday 9th June the Right Reverend Colin Fletcher OBE, Bishop of Dorchester conducted a service of rededication of the bells. The service was attended by many who had contributed to the bell refurbishment fund, several relations of John MacVicker to whom the recast 3rd bell was dedicated and a representative of John Taylor & Co who had carried out the major part of the work on the bells.

The church is now embarking on a major refurbishment programme to fix the nave roof and make the building more user friendly. A display about the roof problems and current intentions for enhancing the church is now in the church. At this stage we do not know what kind of sum will need to be raised, but please go and look at the display and give us your comments and consider giving a donation (there are Gift Aid forms in the church). We are actively progressing the “Friends of St Mary’s” as a charitable body which will help with fund raising and grant applications. The full details can also be found on the Benefice website: under Shipton Church Update.
