The Great War

The call to arms for the best of young men
For King and for country across the Channel to fight
Would they come back? No idea when
To go off to war with ideals in sight
“A war to end all wars”, they said

Soldiers in squalor some wounded, some dead
Countries in ruins and cities no more
How did it help the suffering – not even fed
Just to keep enemies from Britain’s shore
“A war to end all wars”, they said

Four years of misery and thousands now dead
Red poppies to link to a Flanders field
Never again when the enemy fled
As the fierce fighting and conditions forced the Germans to yield
“A war to end all wars”, they said

Treaties were signed letter by letter
Medals and citations awarded
Sit round a table and talk would be better
Than the peace sadly gained from the horrors recorded
“A war to end all wars”, they said
