Wychwoods Local History Society Revived

For the past year, the Wychwoods Local History Society (WLHS) has been in a state of almost suspended animation. There has been no membership subscription and no annual journal. However the Society has regrouped under its new Chairman, Roger Watts, and has had a very successful year of speaker meetings. Now it is proposed to move forward another stage.

Nine speaker meetings are planned for the year 2018/19.
These are:
2018
20 Sep Alastair Lack: Travels with Auntie- my life at the BBC World Service
18 Oct Katherine Bradley: Early women professional gardeners, including the founders of Waterperry
11 Nov Exhibition at St Simon and St Jude Church Milton to mark the 100th anniversary of the ending of the Great War in 1918
15 Nov Clare Sargent: WW1 memorials –public schools in the Great War

2019
17 Jan Nick Way: Sulgrave Manor and the Washington family connection
21 Feb Nick Humphries: Chedworth Roman Villa
21 Mar Liz Woolley: Common lodging houses in Victorian England
18 Apr Mark Davies: Daniel Harris – Oxford Castle gaoler extraordinaire
16 May AGM and Mark Page: VCH research on Milton under Wychwood

All meetings next year will be held in Milton Village Hall on usually the third Thursday of the month, at 19:30 unless otherwise notified on the website, www.wychwoodshistory.org.uk. Non-members are welcome at any of our speaker meetings on payment of £3.

It is hoped that, in the coming year, research by Society members can be published on the website and more of the digitalised archives made available including digitalised versions of the Society’s Journals going back to the Society’s founding over thirty years ago. A present difficulty is that the Society is faced with having to move its archives from Shipton Village Hall. Can anybody make a dry and secure room available?
