Enjoying life at The Paddocks

paddocks01When The Paddocks opened its doors in the summer of 2015, residents who moved into the extra care scheme quickly found out that independent retirement living has a lot to offer.

The Paddocks, located on Shipton Road in Milton, comprises 44 luxurious apartments for shared ownership and rent. Built by housing group GreenSquare, The Paddocks is designed to provide independent living for people aged 55 and over, with flexible care options available. It is a cost-effective way of remaining independent in your own home while having access to personalised on-site care, provided by The Orders of St John Care Trust, if it is needed.

Carly Taylor, House Manager at The Paddocks, explained: “We’ve always wanted to be clear that The Paddocks is not a care home! People live in their own home – everyone has their own front door – but also have the opportunity to be part of a lively community if they’d like to.”

“There’s a hairdressers, restaurant and post office all on site, which are also open to members of the public, and it’s been great to see them being used not just by The Paddocks’ residents, but by people living in the village too.”

As soon as you step foot inside The Paddocks, it is easy to see why residents are so happy here. Immaculately decorated and with beautiful gardens and views out across the countryside, it’s a peaceful and pleasant environment that you can’t help but feel relaxed in.

Organised activities such as Tai Chi, speech choir and the Endorphin Club, take place regularly, as well as numerous resident-led groups such as knitting club and arts and crafts. There are trips to local garden centres arranged for interested residents.

Jean Wright, aged 90, moved into The Paddocks in September 2015, with her husband. Jean said:

“I live in a beautiful two-bedroom flat here and it’s decidedly lovely! When I sadly lost my husband last year, it helped me so much to have such a strong community around me. I take every opportunity to join in with every activity that I can, and I use the hairdressers regularly. What I find really great about living here, is that you can do everything you need to do on site. I even shop online and have my food delivered to my door! I do like to pop out though, and there is a very good bus service that goes straight to Witney.”

If you would like to use any of the facilities at The Paddocks, the restaurant is open seven days a week – simply pop in. The hairdressers is open Tuesdays and Thursdays all day, plus Friday afternoons, and the post office is open on Tuesday afternoon, Thursday morning and Friday morning.
