Wychwoods Tennis Club

tennisclubWe have had another busy and enjoyable summer season of tennis including the Vets Tournament, which took place one sunny, Sunday afternoon in July. It was won by Sue Johnson and Chris Fitzpatrick (pictured) with the runners-up Rosemary Coop and Paul Snare. Sue and Chris were presented with the Rosie Waterman Trophy for the event, by club chairman, Anita Hollingdale.

Road to Wimbledon

Every year the Juniors in the coaching programme enter the Road to Wimbledon competition organised by the Lawn Tennis Association. This year Edward Parker and Rupert Smith made it to the county play-offs, where Rupert reached the quarter-finals and Edward the previous round.

Holiday Camps
Chris Hampton, our club coach, ran four weekly tennis camps over the summer holidays, which were attended by over eighty boys and girls of all standards (including some complete beginners). Chris is very keen to encourage children into tennis and will be running further sessions like these throughout future school holidays.

Tennis for Kids
Another LTA initiative -Tennis for Kids – was piloted at the club this year. Twenty children were able to enjoy FREE tennis coaching for six one-hour weekly sessions as an introduction to tennis. It is very likely that this will be repeated next year.

Free coaching for all Wychwood Primary School Children
Paul Snare, on behalf of the club, has been into the school this summer to provide several sessions of coaching to all the children from Years 1 – 6.

Adult tennis
Organised tennis for adults continues in lots of different forms. There are club sessions open to everyone on Sundays from 10 a.m. –12 noon throughout the year. A ladies’ doubles session on Fridays at 9 a.m. welcomes ladies of all abilities. Group coaching sessions for adults are available for all standards. Cardio tennis on a Tuesday morning at 9.30 a.m. during term time is open to non-members as well as members. It is great exercise. Do come along to give it a go – we can supply a racquet if you do not have one!

Oxfordshire League Tennis
Adults and juniors take part in the county’s league competitions, with six teams in the Aegon League for Juniors and six teams in the Babolat League for adults. All the teams are holding their own in their respective Divisions, with the Men’s B team and the Mixed B currently top of theirs.

Social Tennis
We are a very friendly club and enjoy four social sessions during the week, so if you are interested in finding out more about what goes on, please call Anita Hollingdale (Chairman) on 01993 830743 and visit our website:
