Did you work in the Witney blanket factories?

witneyblanket02There were many sad days for Witney and the surrounding villages when the Witney blanket factories closed. Early & Marriott’s, James Walker & Son and Smiths Blankets (Moderna Witneydown) hired buses and provided transport from local villages for their employees and when they closed it affected many people and communities including the Wychwoods.

I am collecting stories of the mill workers in these factories for a People’s History of their Mill Memories, which I hope will be a celebration of their lives and what it meant to them to work there. Some workers have already written half a dozen lines, others two or three pages. Whatever your story, short or long, it is important to record these moments before they are forgotten. Do you or someone you know have a special memory or any photographs of your time there? It is not a book about how blankets are made, that has been well documented, but a collection of pictures, thoughts, events, friendships made, special memories both happy and sad.

If you have something that you would like included, please email them to me at: angelaproffitt01@gmail.com, or if you would like help writing your own recollections or want more information please call me on 01993 830234.

With thanks
