Dance Addiction, one year on

Dance AddictionawvWell, here we are, still teaching Wychwood (and more distant) folk to dance those elusive, romantic and sexy ballroom styles that constitute our yearly ‘fix’ on Strictly. It has been a busy but fun year – the class has learnt basic groups in the waltz, the tango, social foxtrot, quickstep, the cha cha cha, rumba and jive (phew!), as well as some of the more popular sequence dances that are around. What is more, we can now just play the music and our intrepid dancers can move around the hall (looking, not half bad!) knowing just what dance is being played and (very importantly) what to do to the music – including how to turn those elusive corners!

To the uninitiated, that may not sound very much, but a whole lot of work and concentrated effort (with, admittedly, just a smidgeon of larking about, frustration and blind panic) on the part of our pupils has gone into achieving this over the past year. Their doggedness has paid off and those that completed the year can now rise to the exalted ranks of the improvers’ class where they will be working hard to learn further complexities in order to achieve that lofty goal of becoming a ballroom dancer.

This Autumn, we will be starting a new beginners’ group to be held each Friday evening from 7.15 p.m. to 8.15 p.m. If you have an interest in learning to dance then why not come along and join us? We are running a new ‘taster’ short course of just 6 weeks in which we will be tackling the first steps of three dances to get you started – the social foxtrot, the quickstep and the cha cha cha. We always try and make our classes fun and sociable, but dancing offers so much more – discovery, challenge, companionship, friendship, sociability, physical activity and achievement. You will need to come with a partner, but what could be nicer in today’s world than to go out with your own partner and learn together, something that can provide you both with a worldwide, life-long, hobby and passion – or maybe just a few Friday’s fun!

So, do not keep thinking about it – this year, just do it! What is not to love?
The beginners’ ballroom and Latin 6 week dance course starts on Friday 6th October at 7.15 p.m. in the New Beaconsfield Hall in Shipton-under-Wychwood.
