A wing and a prayer

churchfete04Mid-August, holidays in full swing and gorgeous weather – or not.  Shipton’s fete was cancelled this year, so, at short notice, St Mary’s church stepped in to organise an Open Day. Preparation time was short so organisers stepped out in faith and, presumably, on a wing and a prayer.

churchfete11The result was a lovely afternoon, weather notwithstanding, with activities in the church and outside in the churchyard. This was no village fete but the Open Day brought a great deal of good company, gentle activities and a profit of just over £1,000 for the church that stands at the heart of our community. There were stacks of books and jigsaws, teas, an impressive and informative display of church robes, barbecue, raffle and tours of the bell tower. And everywhere a quiet and inclusive spirit pervaded the atmosphere.

churchfete05So this was not the Milton Fete, nor the Shipton Fete, but it was good, very good, and greatly appreciated.
