He had six uncles and two aunts in the Wiggins family. Three of these uncles were killed in the First World War. There were four further uncles and one aunt in the Miles family. After leaving Burford Grammar School, he spent over three years in the RAF and when he was demobbed he trained to be a land surveyor with the Ordnance Survey, later joining an American company as a land and hydrographic surveyor. He spent most of his working life in the Middle East, Africa and Europe finally in the North Sea.

He gave up travelling at the age of 60 but thanks to Roger Rawlins he worked part time at Alfred Groves & Sons until old age, a job that gave him great pleasure. It was a sad day for Jack Prew, Brian Saxby and Charles when the The Quart Pot closed, but he carried on putting the world to rights over a dram at The Hillborough with Gordon Earley.

Charles led a very full and interesting life and will be remembered by many.
