News from Burford School

Burford School has been selected as one of only twelve schools to appear in the Parliamentary Review of Secondary Education currently being undertaken by the Chancellor, Philip Hammond, and the Labour Party representative on the Education Select Committee, Stephen Timms. Our outstanding results, which have put us in the top 10% of all schools nationally, have obviously been a contributory factor in our selection and we are delighted to have been invited to take part in a review aimed at highlighting best practice in education. It clearly recognises the enormous effort that our students and staff, supported by enthusiastic and supportive parents, put into ensuring our year-on-year success. The report will come out in the Autumn.

BUR-21654 Oliver cropped for local magsOliver! – Tuesday 28th March till Saturday 1st April 2017
Months of hard work, effort and commitment are coming to a head now with our imminent production of Oliver! We are very excited to be staging this particular musical as it has allowed a large number of our younger students to get involved, and it has been lovely to see their confidence grow as rehearsals have progressed. Tickets are £10 (adults) or £8 (students/concessions) for evening performances, and just £6 for Saturday afternoon’s matinee. They are available from Mrs Andrew on 01993 823303 or sand1948@burford.oxon.sch.uk. Performances start at 7.00 p.m. (2.00 p.m. for the matinee) so do come along and enjoy the show. The Burford Musicals are always excellent events, produced to a very high standard.

Sixth Form update
Interest in our Sixth Form has been very high this year with an exceptional number of attendees from other educational institutions at our Open Evening in early December. We also had a number of students from Year 10 getting an early feel for what the school can offer them post-16; an excellent plan since the Autumn of Year 11 is always so busy with GCSE mock exams. With 31 subjects available to students in the Sixth Form there really are choices to be explored and decisions to be made – both of which require time and consideration.

Business is booming
Our Young Enterprise groups continue to go from strength to strength, feeling their way along the steep learning curve from selecting a business idea back in October, to winding up their company and looking at profit and loss just after Easter. Not only do we have two teams competing in the Young Enterprise scheme this year but a number of Year 10 students are also engaged in the ‘Tenner Project’. Both these ‘Tenner’ teams are proving themselves to be enthusiastic entrepreneurs and are growing their original £10 with speed! By the time they reach the Sixth Form, and set out on Young Enterprise, the business acumen they are acquiring will surely make them formidable opponents!
